Im installing sheetrock where outlets and switches are already installed. Ive seen lots of examples of how to easily locate cutout locations for installing drywall where the boxes are empty. However, for boxes that already have switches and/or outlets, is there a better way than measuring from the floor and from a nearby stud, in order to make the cutouts in the drywall?

That's the best method. Measure thrice, cut once.

i had some of them in the 70's, havent seen them since, they worked pretty good, you had to pound the s/r pretty hard tho. you could probably make one w/plywood frame & nails.

Another old thread brought up by spam.  But, what you can do is buy a  metal extension box.  Its a box with no back.  It mounts to the same screws the receptical mounts to.  All you have to do is loosen the mounting screws for a receptical and slide the box over the screws.  Place the drywall against it and tap it.  It will leave impressions on the back of the drywall.

I prefer the measuring method, double and triple check. You can also remove the screws that attach the outlet halfway, push the sheetrock against it, it will leave dents where the screws are. Make a template and align the holes to cut.
